Wind is a natural source of energy which is kinetic in nature. It is actually a form of solar energy. Now you must be thinking, how wind power can be a form of solar energy? Let me tell you that the source of wind power is the heat of the sun itself. When the solar radiation touch earth’s surface, it heats up every part of the earth’s surface, such as sand, water, stone and soil, but the amount of heat the different surfaces of earth absorb, retain, reflect and release is different from each other. Wind is a natural power resource which keeps circulating around earth all the time. Now, the biggest question is, “how is wind generated?” When sun rays fall on earth’s surface it heats up the earth’s surface which results in rise in temperature. Now, this kind of heating is not equal in all parts of the earth. It is unequal. There are parts of earth which are heated up to a large extent and because of this the air in such places become lighter and starts moving up. The gap between the earth’s surface and the warm air gets filled by the air which is heavy. This heavy air comes from the adjoining cooler places. Forget what you think! It is just an unwarranted assumption that wind power can only be used to generate electricity. The number of applications it can support directly or indirectly is also unbelievable. Thanks to its environment-friendly nature, pretty soon all these applications would be used at large scale by the forth coming generations. Since a long time ago, ancient people had known the benefit of wind to help their life easier. In Babylonia and China, for instance, nearly 4000 years ago the inhabitants of two regions used the power of the wind to pump water for their crops. You have seen a windmill in most typical Holland postcards. It looks similar to airplane propellers but instead of stirring the wind to create a powerful thrust to move the plane, it does the reverse. A typical wind turbine waits for the wind blow in order to work. So depending on the wind direction the propeller must turn to face the wind flow perpendicularly.
